#50Days50Ways - #18 - Delivering the Lower Beechmont Community Space

The Lower Beechmont Community Space has been a project simmering for some years, after Sara and Sarah (two instigators of the Nature Play area in Syd Duncan Park) surveyed residents about the preferred next steps for improving the park area.

Initially the building was a small modular library type facility but was ultimately converted to a more robust solution after the 2019 bushfires affected the area and it was evident there would be a benefit in delivering a community hub to separate emergency services operations (fire, storm recovery, etc) from the community service response.

Ultimately, my office worked with the then Community Services department and a grant application was lodged to a relevant state government department, who awarded the city a $1.5m grant to deliver the project. That was an exciting day!

Since that time, the design has been subject to multiple community consultation events, both in public and in session with local community groups most likely to use the facility in non-emergency seasons. It’s been upgraded to be resilient to storm, capable to house sustainable solar power solution and accessible with amenities to suit visitors and young families who frequent the adjacent playground.

The project will be constructed from February 2024 in Brisbane and assembled on-site from April 2024, with a proposed opening date of September 2024, subject to weather.

You can find out more about the project here.

I’m so proud to have delivered on my promise to get a suitable community building delivered for the Lower Beechmont community.
